Special Stage

Special stages are non-minesweeper stages in a quest.
Interactions
Special stages appear in quests on the select a stage screen. They are optional, when unlocked they also unlock the next normal stage.
Some effects that mention "stage" can work on special stages, but only if they function on non-minsweeper stage properties. For instance you can unlock, uncomplete, or "exit without completing" a special stage. But you can't add monsters, increase the stage power or add Stage Mods. Similarly, effects that trigger when you complete or begin a stage do not count special stages.
Special Stages
Item Shop

Allows the player to exchange gold for items. Item costs in the shop are randomly adjusted up or down by up to 30% (rounded down, minimum 1) from the base costs in the codex. Hard mode (and above) quests add an additional +25% (rounded up) to all costs. The items that appear are limited to those with base costs from 1 coin up to to slightly more than the amount of coins you have. This means it is normal to spawn items you can't quite afford, especially on hard.
Omens do not usually appear in the shop, as well as other items that cost 0 coins. Because it costs 1 coin,
Dead Rodent is an exception. Or many omens may appear if the player has the
The Plague.
With a
Merchant Ring, the player can also sell items. The shop will not buy Omens (except
Dead Rodent).
Price Ranges
Here is a table of base item values, with the min and max prices that they can appear with in each difficulty.

Alternate Special Stages
Alongside normal Item Shops, other types of Special Stages can be added to the quest alongside Item Shops. Unlike Item Shops however, these shops are not guaranteed to spawn in any given quest (except for Banks in Endless Multiverse).
Academy

When entered, the Academy offers three random masteries, allowing the player to replace their current mastery free of charge. Masteries gained through the Academy are set to Tier 3, and have their ultimate ability ready to use.
Note that certain masteries begin the quest with items, and that these effects are not replicated through the Academy.
Changing your mastery mid-quest can be quite helpful for newer players to unlock the selected mastery. Many masteries, through their design, directly help in unlocking themselves and their later tiers, especially at their later tiers.
Altar

The Altar offers player 3 Omens, each with a reward beneath it. 2 will offer the player souls, and the third may offer either souls or a revive. The player can accept an omen for the indicated reward.
Note that if the player is offered an Omen that reduces healing or prevents gaining max life, such as the
Chastity Belt, the Omen will still negate the benefit offered by the Altar.
Bank

The Bank allows players to store their items, generating coins and keeping the items safe.
When in the Bank, selecting one of the three slots and right clicking an item from the inventory stores it. Storing an item locks it inside the Bank, requiring the player beat a stage to gain access to it. The player can freely exit and re-enter the bank from the Overworld screen. Any item can be stored, including Omens.
Interest
After completing a stage, all of the items currently stored at the Bank generate interest, in coins. The amount of coins gained depends on the items held at the Bank, with each item generating 20% of their base coin value in interest.
If the player decides to withdraw the accrued interest, the Bank will close. Any items left in the Bank's item slots will be lost as well.
The
Banker's Tier II ability takes the player to the Bank after every stage. A Banker can also withdraw any amount of interest from the Bank without closing the Special Stage down.
Endless Multiverse
As of the 2.0.0 update, each universe in Endless Multiverse has a guaranteed Bank stage. Items stored in the Bank will be kept in between dimensions, functionally replacing and old
Landmark, the Dimensional Vault.
Bazaar

Similar to an Item Shop, the Bazaar allows the player to buy items, as well as offering to purchase the player's items for coins, or even for other items.
Upon entering the Bazaar, the player is greeted with three choices:
- Buy - Purchase an item, just like the Item Shop.
- Sell - Lose one of your items for coins.
- Exchange - Trades the specified item for another.
Each selection is independent of one another, making it possible to sell off all your items while the offer to buy a given item remains the same. However, Sell and Trade can randomly target the same item. If the desired item is lost through Selling or Trading, the other will try and select a new item.
Unlike item shops, bazaars can buy and exchange omens. While in a Bazaar, the player cannot use Consumable Items.
Chaos Font

The Chaos Front offers the player an assortment of 6 options for a consistent price. These options will be 4 random non-Omen items of various costs, 1 omen and an exit.
If the player pays the indicated cost, they receive an option at random. If it was an item, it is then replaced by another exit. If they draw an exit, the font will dry up and the player will be ejected.
Guild

The Guild offers the player four random Strangers to purchase for use later in the quest, spawning them in Bubbles. One type of Stranger can be purchased multiple times.
While almost any type of Stranger cane be offered from the Guild, certain seasonal Strangers like Mrs. Clause and the Snowman cannot be found. However, more obscure Strangers, such as the Harbinger, can be found offered in the Guild.
Item Tree

Unlike all other Special Stages, the Item Tree plays like a minigame, letting a player collect various items, loot, whilst avoiding Spiders.
Upon entering the Special Stage, the player is given a brief pause with a 'Ready?' message in the middle of the screen. After this brief pause, the player has 15 Seconds to click and collect various loot.
The Item Tree produces more loot as the timer progresses, with older items eventually dropping and disappearing. Clicking any coins, diamonds, or hearts will collect them like normal, and any item clicked will be added to the inventory. If the inventory is full, the item is instead put into a bubble. Clicking a Spider will instead deal 1 Damage to the player. The variety of items produced by the Item Tree can vary wildly, producing both Omens, and even able to make expensive items like the
Paragon Rod.
As the timer gets closer to the end, the amount of items and spiders spawned increases, eventually having dozens of each by the last second.
All Bark
If the player has a
Handaxe, they can click on the Item Tree's face near the bottom of the screen. Doing so will steadily anger it, eventually causing the timer to pause, the screen to turn red with fire in the background, and the Item Tree to become hostile, initiating a unique 'real time boss battle'. Once in this state, the player needs to chop down the Item Tree, as the timer is paused, and the Item Tree begins producing spiders that deal damage to you even when not clicked.
With each hit with the Handaxe, the Item Tree has a chance to steal it away, hiding it in its leaves like a normal item. Without a Handaxe, the player cannot attack the tree, so they need to retrieve the Handaxe to continue the fight.
Once the Item Tree is defeated, the player is rewarded with the
All Bark Mythic Emblem.
Library

The Library allows the player to choose a Research Subject from a large selection randomly picked when entering the stage.
By selecting a Research Subject, the odds of finding items relating to the selected subject will be increased, lasting for the remainder of the quest, or until the player gains another research subject. The score box will also specify the current research topic: 'You are an expert at finding "<BLANK>" items.'
In addition to the research subject, the Library also provides the player with an item which features the specified subject. This item can't be an omen but is otherwise a random item of any value.

Lighthouse

The Lighthouse allows the player to augment the next uncompleted stage, changing it to be easier by choosing 1 of 3 options for free:
- Remove Monsters - Reduces the total number of Monsters in the targeted stage.
- Remove/Add a Stage Mod - If the targeted stage has a negative stage mod, the Lighthouse can remove it. Alternatively, if it has no stage mods, it can add a random positive Stage Mod instead.
- Reduce the Stage Power - Directly lowers the Stage Power of the targeted stage.
Before 2.0.0, the Lighthouse could only affect the closest non-special stage.
Rite of Passage

The Rite of Passage gives the player three options, increasing max life, their legendary cap, or their defense. Purchasing any one of these rites will increase the respective stats, and closes the stage.
The cost, and associated gains for a given rite is different between life and defense to legendary cap. Legendary Cap linearly increases by 10 Coins for every +1 increase. 10 Coins to increase the cap to 2, 100 Coins to get the cap to 11 Legendries from 10.
Life and Defense are more complex. There are 7 "tiers" of exponentially more expensive upgrades (from +1 to +7 hp/defence). Each offer will be a random price the player can afford from either the highest tier the player can afford or the next tier below. The chances are in some way proportional to the coins on hand. The closer the player's coins on hand are to the top of a range, the more often they receive prices for that range instead of the one below. For example +3 offers are technically possible when the player has exactly 21 coins, but are very unlikely.
| Coin cost range | Max Lives / Defense |
|---|---|
| 5 | +1 |
| 6-20 | +2 |
| 21-72 | +3 |
| 84-360 | +4 |
| 420-2160 | +5 |
| 2520-15120 | +6 |
| 17640-27720 | +7 |
Smithy

The Smithy allows for the purchase of armor at a fixed price.
The options offered include:
- Head Armor for 10 Coins
- Chest Armor for 30 Coins
- Leg Armor for 20 Coins
Once purchased, the Smithy needs time to work on the item, requiring the player complete a normal stage first before coming back for their item. Leaving and re-entering the Smithy before the purchase is ready will keep it open.
Upon coming back after completing a stage, the item is offered to the player for no additional cost, although a player has the option to refuse the armor. Either option closes the Smithy.
Starpond

The Starpond offers a large selection of meta-progression items, such as Emblems, Glints, and Artifacts, for Tokens and coins.
They are found in the second half of every quest on Hard mode and above. Does not replace an existing Item Shop.
Waygate

The Waygate presents the player with three random stages in the current quest, excluding the Waygate itself.
The destination stages can include both normal stages and special stages, whether or not they are unlocked, or have been already completed. Choosing an option sends the player directly to the destined stage, with a fourth option to decline the options that the Waygate provides. All options cause the Waygate to be closed.
The stage you are transported to will complete as it normally would. You will usually want to visit other available special stages before using the waygate, to have a chance access them twice.
Workshop

The Workshop allows the player to pay Mastery charges to purchase a range of 3 Mastery Dolls. A Doll matching the player's current mastery is always offered.
