Butter is a consumable item. It is very useful for getting rid of omens/unwanted passives, or for reordering your inventory (as might be pertinent, ex. 
Bubble Wrap, 
Devouring mod, sealed inventory slots). The items may drop into unopened cells, so be wary that you might not be able to recollect your items until you've completed the stage.
